Sprint 3 – Unreal issues and Substance painter

1st April 2020

Today I tried to open UE4 once I had installed it and began to recreate the Unreal project I had in college. However, about 30-40 minutes in the program crashed and the project corrupted, so I would have to start again. As well as this, due to my PC not being very powerful, it can barely run unreal to the standard I need.

Whilst I figure out ways to configure this problem, I have installed Substance painter and have been watching YouTube beginner tutorials to help me understand how to use it. I have been experimenting with some of the sample models given by substance called ‘MeetMat’ using things such as the ‘main shaders’ and ‘fill’ layers. I have also been learning shortcuts such as symmetry and the ‘D’ shortcut which allows for a ‘smoothing’ kind of effect whilst drawing details on the model. I also learned how to change the environment shaders & enable and disable shadows which affect the painting process (colours will look different in different shaders/environments). I will continue to experiment with this using the sample models and tomorrow I will begin to texture the cave assets using substance. Considering the rock assets have crystals built into them, I am not too sure how to make these crystals see-through. I think it is the shaders beside the layers but I will find this out today and apply it tomorrow.
